Antique 1890s Warren County Ohio Diploma in Hand-Carved Gold Ornate Frame
A remarkable survivor of late 19th-century American education—this Warren County, Ohio “Common School” diploma, dated 1891, offers both historical presence and decorative impact in equal measure.
Printed in an elegant typographic hand with classical flourishes, the document certifies completion of studies including orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, and United States history—subjects that once defined a well-rounded education at the close of the 19th century. The diploma is issued in Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, and retains its original signatures and printed seal.
The paper shows its age honestly, with light foxing throughout and areas of tonal variation that speak to its 130+ years of history. A small ribbon detail remains present within the composition, now softly folded and timeworn. The piece is housed under glass in what appears to be its original frame.
The frame itself is the true showstopper—richly cast with deep scrolling detail and finished in a warm gilt tone that has mellowed beautifully over time. It offers dramatic depth and texture, elevating the diploma into a statement piece suitable for a study, library wall, or layered gallery arrangement.
