1901 Signed Oil on Board Still Life | Roses & Wine Bottle

A wonderfully timeworn oil on board still life, dated 1901 and signed with the artist’s initial “J.”

Golden roses spill across the composition beside an old wine bottle tucked within a woven covering, all rendered with expressive, heavily worked brushstrokes. Deep greens, muted blue-gray tones, warm ochres, and touches of burgundy give the painting a rich, romantic quality that feels particularly at home in a collected interior.

More than 125 years of age remain visible across the painted surface, with areas of flaking, chipping, paint loss, and cracking throughout, particularly toward the upper and lower portions. Rather than disappearing into the composition, these imperfections have become part of its character—an honest record of a painting that has lived a long life.
