Vintage Japanese Silver-Tone Ornate Candlesticks with Glass Bobeches | Pair
A wonderfully ornate pair of vintage Japanese candlesticks with sculptural silver-tone metal bases and removable clear glass bobeches.
Each candlestick is heavily decorated with raised shell and foliate motifs arranged across a low, footed form, giving the pair a distinctly Rococo Revival character. Beaded detailing surrounds the candle cups, while the clear glass bobeches add both sparkle and function by catching candle drips.
The undersides retain period labels and markings, including “Hughes” and “Made in Japan,” along with instructions identifying the metal finish as tarnish resistant and advising cleaning with a damp cloth rather than silver polish. Because the exact composition of the metal and finish has not been confirmed, we are conservatively describing these as silver-tone metal rather than silverplate.
A lovely matched pair for a mantel, dining table, dressing table or collected display, particularly alongside old silver, portraiture and traditional decorative objects.
