A heartfelt Victorian sentiment beautifully preserved for more than a century.

This antique Victorian punched paper motto sampler features the beloved phrase, “What Is Home Without a Mother,” meticulously embroidered with silk thread on punched paper. During the late nineteenth century, motto samplers like this were treasured decorative pieces, often displayed in parlors and family gathering spaces as daily reminders of the importance of home and family.

The sampler is housed in its original walnut Eastlake Cross-Slat frame, distinguished by overlapping corner rails, carved leaf corner appliqués, and incised geometric detailing characteristic of the Eastlake movement. The architectural frame is every bit as captivating as the sampler itself, making this an exceptional decorative and collectible piece.

The reverse retains its original wood backing. Between the backing board and the sampler is a fragment of period-appropriate newspaper, a common nineteenth-century framing practice used as a protective barrier. Natural age-related shrinkage in the original wood backing now offers a glimpse of this historic paper layer, preserving another authentic detail of the piece’s history.

Whether displayed in a cottage, farmhouse, library, hallway, or collected gallery wall, this antique sampler brings warmth, history, and timeless character to any home.
