Some pieces arrive with a story.

Others make you discover it.

This antique portrait came home with us from an antiquing trip to the Ohio Valley Antique Mall. At first glance, it was simply a charming portrait of a woman in a period frame. Later, while examining the piece more closely, we noticed newspaper clippings tucked behind the glass.

Those clippings revealed the identity of the sitter: Mrs. J. F. Maag.

According to the preserved newspaper articles, Mrs. Maag was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1842, married in 1861, and was the mother of thirteen children. She passed away in 1920 during the Spanish flu pandemic. For more than a century, these clippings remained hidden with the portrait, quietly preserving a small piece of her history.

The portrait is offered together with the original newspaper clippings discovered within the frame. Whether placed there by a family member, a caretaker, or a previous owner, they create a remarkable connection between the portrait and the life it represents.

A meaningful addition for collectors of portraiture, ephemera, genealogy, Americana, and pieces with documented provenance.
