Antique Dog Book Plate Engraving in Custom Ornate Frame

A wonderfully charming antique wood-engraved book plate depicting a dignified spotted dog standing upright with a walking cane and cushion, rendered with remarkable detail and Victorian-era character.

This original engraving was carefully removed from an antique children’s book and professionally presented in a substantial 11 x 14 decorative frame with layered matting to showcase the illustration as a refined piece of wall art. The frame is approximately 1 1/4" thick.  The image itself measures approximately 5 x 7 inches and retains the warm, softly toned paper that only age can produce.

The reverse of the page includes a story titled “A Devoted Mother,” recounting a touching tale of a cat and her kittens being rescued from a burning house. This text on the reverse confirms the print’s origin as a book illustration and adds an additional layer of historical interest and storytelling.

The engraving appears to be a true wood engraving, a relief printing technique widely used in the 19th century for illustrated books and periodicals. Fine line work, crisp detail, and the artist’s small signature or initials with the date mark “91” visible in the lower corner suggest an illustration created or published in 1891.

Historical Background

During the late Victorian era, wood engravings were the primary means of reproducing artwork in books and magazines before modern photographic printing. These illustrations were hand-carved into blocks of hardwood and printed with incredible precision. Animal imagery, especially dogs, was highly popular and often appeared in educational books, storybooks, and decorative publications.

This whimsical canine portrait captures the anthropomorphic humor and refined illustration style beloved during the 19th century. Its unusual composition and expressive detail make it a particularly engaging piece for dog lovers, collectors of antique prints, and those who appreciate literary and decorative history.
