Antique Coastal Lighthouse Oil Painting with Grazing Cattle in Carved Gilt Wood Frame
An evocative antique oil on canvas depicting a lighthouse standing against a luminous coastal sky, surrounded by a rugged shoreline and crashing waves. Look closely along the bluff and one of the painting’s most charming details appears: five tiny cattle grazing above the water.
The composition moves from turbulent water and dark rock formations to a remarkable yellow-gold horizon, with muted blue-gray clouds stretching overhead. The lighthouse rises from the rocky point at left while the cattle provide an unexpected pastoral counterpoint to the maritime landscape.
Believed to date to the late 19th or early 20th century, the painting remains in an elaborate period carved wood frame with darkened gilt finish, floral scrollwork, a diamond-patterned inner border, and narrow gilt liner.
The work is unsigned as far as we can determine. The canvas was previously nailed into the frame, and because removing it could cause damage, we have intentionally left it in place. There may be a signature concealed beneath the frame, but we cannot confirm one.
This is an antique painting that very clearly carries its history with it. It has undergone careful cleaning and basic stabilization while retaining the age, wear, previous repairs, and imperfections acquired over many decades.

Condition & Conservation
This painting has considerable age-related condition issues, all of which contribute to its visibly antique character and should be considered before purchase.
The canvas has previous damage, most noticeably in the area surrounding the lighthouse. That area has been stabilized and repaired to help prevent further movement. The painting has also been gently cleaned.
Small spots of white paint or similar surface material remain, including areas toward the lower right and upper right. These could not be safely removed during cleaning and have been left as found.
The carved wood frame shows losses, chips, cracks, surface wear, finish loss, previous repairs, and general evidence of age. Areas of missing carved ornament are visible.
The canvas is secured to the frame with nails that appear to predate our ownership. We chose not to remove the painting from the frame because doing so presented an unnecessary risk of additional damage.
Please note: Shop of Old is not a professional art conservation or restoration studio. The work performed was limited to careful cleaning, stabilization of existing canvas damage, and repair/stabilization of damaged areas of the frame. No claim is made that the painting has received professional conservation treatment.
This piece is sold as found, as repaired, and as shown. Please review all photographs carefully for its condition and character.
Styling & Display
This is exactly the kind of antique painting that can carry a wall by itself. The long horizontal format works beautifully over a writing desk, chest, mantel, or within a collected gallery wall. The dark gilt frame makes the remarkable golden sky even more pronounced, while the tiny cattle reward anyone who gets close enough to really study the painting.
